Ask a Designer - Restoration Hardware look for less

Q: "We've been debating whether to just purchase everything from Restoration hardware or work with an interior designer to help furnish everything.  My question is 1- if we should just buy everything from RH or go with an interior designer or 2 - I know interior designers use different wholesale vendors that we are not familiar with. Do these other vendors have stuff similar to the look and styles of RH?"

A: I am a huge fan of restoration hardware as well!  I have made many purchases from RH for residential clients as well as for our developer model homes. The RH aesthetic is timeless and classic and although they have a very distinct “look” overall, it is very possible to mix and match from other suppliers in order to create that "restoration hardware" aesthetic. I have included examples of furniture pieces from retailers that have a similar look to RH.

  • We often purchase from several different suppliers when we are putting together a furniture package for a client or purchasing furniture for our model home/display homes for our development projects.
  • Restoration Hardware furniture ranges in price quite a bit but overall they are considered a mid – high end purchase.  I often purchase key items from Restoration hardware and then include other pieces in the mix.

  • I think that using different suppliers also results in a look that is unique to your specific space/home rather than replicating the showroom at RH.
  • Suppliers like The Cross, The Citizenry, Amber Interiors, Anthropology, The Cross carry products similar in style.  Stores like Crate and Barrel, West Elm, Pottery Barn, Wayfair and Room and Board all have furniture items that they will carry similar to the RH style as well. The difference being that these stores will carry furniture with different looks as well (modern, Scandinavian, traditional, industrial) wherease RH has a very distinct and specific style within all its pieces. Please see furniture pieces that are NOT from RH that I have included here.
